The Effect of AAC focused Communication Program on the Communication Skills of Adults with Developmental Disabilities

Abstract
Background and Purpose: Despite the need for life-long communication support for people with developmental disabilities, systematic communication interventions for adults with developmental disabilities are sparse. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of AAC focused comprehensive communication program tailored for a day care center for adults with developmental disabilities.

METHODS: The intervention included the following components: 1) modification of the environment and daily structure of the day care center to facilitate participants communication, 2) evaluation of participants¡¯ communication characteristics, 3) provision of an AAC intervention customized to each participant¡¯s communication characteristics and needs and 4) staff education and training to enhance their ability to support participants communication.

Results: The results of this study shows that communication function and frequency of the participants increased significantly. Participants also showed improved use of various communication methods. Finally, staff reported increased use of communication strategies in communication with participants.

Discussion and conclusion: Suggestions for future use and implications are discussed.
